Algeria shares the bendir with its Maghrebi neighbors, but the instrument’s deepest roots here run through Amazigh (Berber) culture rather than Arab classical tradition — used in ahidous and ahwash communal dance gatherings of the Atlas and Aurès regions, predating the instrument’s later absorption into Sufi devotional practice after the spread of Islam.
